âWow,â I said. âThis place is amazing!â
Harold slithered to the snake tank and chatted with a trio of copperheads. I chose to keep my distance. Harold aside, snakes werenât on my top thousand list of favorite species.
âThank you,â Vivian said. âItâs been a dream come true. Iâve wanted to open an exotic magical pet store since I was a kid.â
âI love that. It must have been frustrating when Agatha tried to have you shut down.â
âOh, she didnât try. She just threatened to take it to the Department of Health, but there was no reason. There werenât any violations.â
âThatâs good. I thought there were?â
âNope. She was just angry because I had to increase the price of my organic rat food. Costs of materials have increased, and I still need to make a profit.â
âWhat would she need rat food for? Her familiar?â
âI suspect that was the case. I wonder where the poor thing went?â
âOften the familiar crosses over with the charge.â
âI know, but Iâd think the poor thing would want to find another witch. Goddess knows living with Agatha had to be rough.â
âYou werenât a fan?â
âNo one was a fan. Of course, I wouldnât wish death on anyone, but I donât think anyone will miss her.â She blinked. âOh, is this about Ezzie? I heard she was on the top of the suspect list. Howâs she doing?â
âI think her memory issues wiped it from her mind.â
âBut itâs still on yours,â she said.
âIâm determined to prove she didnât do it.â
âBy finding the magical who did?â
âThat or just showing Sergeant Winston he has other options.â
âLike me.â
I pressed my lips together. âIâm not saying you murdered her.â
âI know. Iâd do the same thing if Ezzie was my aunt. Iâll tell you where I was, but you donât have to tell Sergeant Winston. Let him do the work.â
âSure,â I said. âI assume Harold is your familiar?â
âYes.â
âMine is Benedict. Heâs the Persian cat lying in the window. He has a unique palate, and I went to the south end of the woods to find some chestnut oak acorns. He loves them, and theyâre all over the woods this time of year.â She turned around and opened a refrigerator behind her counter and grabbed a bag of over-sized acorns. âI got extra so I wouldnât have to go back. He likes them in his chicken gravy. Itâs a sweet and savory thing, I think.â
I smiled. âHaroldâs palate is all over the charts.â
She eyed the snake tank. âThen I have something you should get.â She crooked her finger for me to follow her to the snake tank and grabbed a box next to it. âHeâll love this.â
The tag on the box said fifty bucks. âItâs okay. Iâve got plenty of his favorites at home.â
âItâs on the house. Trust me, heâll love it.â
âThanks,â I said. I checked my watch. âSpeaking of eating, itâs time for his lunch.â
âGood luck, Esme. If you have more questions, just come on by.â
âI will.â I thanked her for her time and headed out.
âGuilty,â Harold said outside.
